There are two kinds of Fridays in Shallowater between late August and early November. On one, the parking lot at Todd Field starts filling by six, the concession line at Ave L runs long, and every table at Jackrabbit Grill is spoken for by 5:30. On the other, the town is quiet, the Mustangs are on a bus to Childress or Plainview, and the restaurants along Clovis Road have room to spare. If you already live here, the calendar you actually run your fall on is not the school calendar or the retail calendar. It is the home-game schedule.
That is the argument of this post. Once you can read the 2026 varsity slate, you can predict which Friday nights your town will be crowded, which ones will feel like a normal small West Texas evening, and where to plan around either.
The 2026 varsity slate, at a glance
The Mustangs open on the road Aug 28 at Childress, then bring the season home for the first time Sept 4. Here is what the fall looks like, drawn from the schedule posted by Shallowater Athletics:
| Date | Opponent | Location | Kickoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fri Aug 28 | Childress | Away | 7:00 PM |
| Fri Sep 4 | Seminole | Home | 7:00 PM |
| Fri Sep 11 | Canadian | Away | 7:00 PM |
| Fri Sep 18 | Monahans | Home | 7:00 PM |
| Fri Sep 25 | Idalou | Home | 7:00 PM |
| Fri Oct 2 | Plainview | Away | 7:00 PM |
| Fri Oct 16 | Bushland | Home | 7:00 PM |
| Fri Oct 23 | Brownfield | Away | 7:00 PM |
| Fri Oct 30 | Dalhart | Home | 7:00 PM |
| Fri Nov 6 | Denver City | Away | 7:00 PM |
Five home Fridays. Five away. One open week between Sept 25 and Oct 2. That structure is the thing to internalize.
Where the town eats before kickoff
The half-hour between 5:00 and 5:30 on a home Friday is the busiest window of the week in this town. Todd Field sits at FM 1294 and Ave L with roughly 2,000 stadium seats depending on which official listing you use, and a decent share of that crowd eats within a mile of the field before walking in.
Jackrabbit Grill is the default. It shows up first on almost every "best restaurants near Shallowater" list, and on a home night the tables turn twice before kickoff. If you want to sit, you either arrive by 4:45 or you do not arrive at all. The Shack BBQ and The Smokin' Hogan's BBQ, which has been running catering and takeout out of Shallowater since 2019, both trend toward call-ahead orders on game days for a reason. Fred's Garage carries a different crowd, adults meeting up before walking over, and locals will tell you the community-gathering feel of that place is a large part of why it works.
For something faster, Mi Casita De Adobe at 911 Clovis Rd runs takeout Mexican, which is the right answer when kickoff is 45 minutes away and you have three kids in the truck. If you have forgotten sunflower seeds, water, or a stadium-approved clear bag, the Yesway at 1105 12th St stays open through the game.
The pregame rush is not a lunch rush and it is not a Saturday-night dinner rush. It is compressed into one 45-minute window, five Fridays out of the season. Restaurants that thrive here plan their staffing around the Mustangs' home schedule, not around the day of the week.
Sep 25 is the one to circle
Look at the schedule again. Sept 25 vs. Idalou at home is the game that carries district-rivalry weight this year, and it lands at Todd Field. Idalou is a short drive up US-84, the two programs know each other, and the visiting side of the stands tends to travel. If you live near the field and have a driveway on Ave L, this is the Friday to plan around. If you own one of the pregame restaurants, this is the night your staff calls in favors.
Coming off a 2025 season where the Mustangs went 8-4 overall, ran the table 3-0 in league play, and reached the Class 3A Division I playoffs before falling to Peaster 16-0 on Nov 21, expectations for this game specifically will be high. Dave Campbell's has the program classed as 3A Division I heading into 2026.
What the away Fridays are actually for
Here is the piece most guides miss. The away Fridays are not empty. They are the nights the rest of the town's fall calendar can actually breathe.
Take Oct 2. Mustangs at Plainview, an hour up the road. The stands travel, but a large part of Shallowater stays home. That is when the tables at Jackrabbit open up, when a couples' dinner at Fred's Garage stops feeling like a battle, and when the parking around Ave L is normal again. Same logic for Sept 11 (at Canadian), Oct 23 (at Brownfield), and Nov 6 (at Denver City).
If you are trying to host out-of-town guests, book a birthday dinner, or attend something in Lubbock on a Friday, the away weeks are the ones to pick. Home Fridays belong to the field. Away Fridays belong to everything else.
The odd one out is the open week between Sept 25 and Oct 2. No game either Friday for the varsity to face. Restaurants report their usual small-town Friday flow, and that week tends to be a good one for community events that would otherwise get lost in the football noise.
The other fall anchor: the Ed Foundation Gala
Football is the loud part of the calendar, but it is not the only anchor. The Shallowater Education Foundation has its annual gala scheduled for August 2026 at the Frazier Alumni Pavilion on the Texas Tech campus, 2680 Drive of Champions in Lubbock. Sponsorship details are being finalized on the Foundation's site. If you are looking for the fall event that draws the broadest cross-section of Shallowater residents off the field, this is it.
The Foundation raises money for teacher grants and program support inside Shallowater ISD. Buying a table is one of the more direct ways to see who your neighbors are, especially if you are new here and Todd Field on a Friday feels like everyone already knows each other.
A short set of notes if you are new
A few practical things residents figure out by their second home game:
- Todd Field's playing surface is artificial turf, so a light rain earlier in the day does not cancel or move the game. Check the Shallowater ISD athletics feed the day of for weather calls, not the field surface.
- Parking on Ave L fills from the field outward. If you arrive after 6:30, plan on walking three or four blocks.
- Kickoff is 7:00 PM every home Friday this season. That is a change worth internalizing if you moved from a district that ran 7:30 starts.
- The Shallowater Sports Network on Facebook is the fastest source for live game updates if you cannot make it in person.
The takeaway
The reason "what is there to do in Shallowater on a Friday night?" is the wrong question is that it treats every Friday the same. They are not. Five of them this fall belong to the Mustangs at Todd Field, and the town reorganizes itself around each one. The other five, the town runs on its normal rhythm, restaurants have tables, and you can catch up on everything the home Fridays crowded out. Read the schedule once, and the fall stops feeling like a blur.
